Burning man

09/19/2018

The barren Nevada Black Rock Desert holds an imaginative land of adventures and mystical creatures.

An adventure of a life time.

A land of opportunity and inexplicable transformation, when placed in this erratic  environment, possibilities start flowing and so do new strange encounters with others and yourself.

Taken out of daily life, placed in a mystical and foreign atmosphere filled with moving man made creatures called art cars and wildly dressed humans performing in a outrageous manner, looking to out do each other in their outlandish costumes.

A land of bizarre allegorical performance pieces, fire breathing dragons and happy elves.

A place where art is celebrated for art’s sake, art in it’s purest form. This is not art that can be viewed independently of the process that fosters its creation. It is the fruit of self expression elevated to a civic duty, a medium of gift exchange within a relentlessly social environment. Burning man is a revival of arts culture-bearing and connective function. It is art that is meant to be touched, handled, played with, and moved.

“You can learn more about a person in an hour of play than a year of conversation.” Plato

Burning man is an annual event in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada describes itself as a "temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and radical self-reliance.”

It is a place where 75,000 people descend on a 7- square mile patch of desert.

Visitors have to be ready for anything, such as radical sandstorms, harsh hot sunlight and plummeting temperatures.

Survival methods are used in this harsh environment, to ensure a safe festive experience.

A week long voyage requires serious planning. My Dad went this year and he met a woman who had been planning her Burn for 10 years.

Within Burning Man there is a new society which comes with rules- there is no currency exchange but instead unconditional gifting and random acts of kindness are the norm.

This place sounds out of this world when really it is an accessible yet arduous journey to get there and an experience welcome to any person. For instance the 12 hours of traffic you have to endure between the highway and the gate. Most burners drive, but you can also arrive by bus, taxi, parachute or plane, there is an operating airport in Black Rock City.

When embarking on such an adventure you want to come well prepared with plenty of food, a tent or RV, and should consume up to 1.5 gallons of water each day.

Survival essentials include Sunscreen. sanitary wipes, dust mask, dust goggles, led lights, costumes, gifts and  trash bags. Leave with no trace. Burners even rake the ground before they leave.

A one in a kind experience that will transform your way of being, knowing and feeling.
