Australian values, belifs and rights

Year 12, English, Oceana Piccone, Speech

“Which values, beliefs and rights are central to Australian identity?”

what values are worth keeping and what ones are worth leaving behind.

I've chosen to analyse the Australian anthem in relation to where we stand as a united society.

“Australians all let us rejoice,

For we are young and free; We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil; Our home is girt by sea;

Our land abounds in nature’s gifts Of beauty rich and rare;

In history’s page, let every stage Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross We’ll toil with hearts and hands; To make this Commonwealth of ours Renowned of all the lands;

For those who’ve come across the seas We’ve boundless plains to share; With courage let us all combine

To Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair.”

Throughout the Australian anthem, there are many moral values being portrayed.

However many of which aren’t being enforced in todays Australian society.

To be Australian means to explore diverse cultural values, respect others and their wellbeing and to obtain moral responsibilities.

As an Australian citizen and as an individual you have to pledge to honour Australian democratic beliefs, rights and liberties.

Therefore having freedom of speech, equality and safety.

Why do we as a society deny new cultural growth and deny foreign individuals entry to our ‘Advance fair society.’

We say ‘For all those who have come across the seas We’ve boundless plains to share; with courage let us all combine’  These words we so proudly chant are not being enforced today.

When did we loose these fine values? When did we choose to ignore these lofty ideals.

The Australian anthem states that we are all free.

 We sing ‘our lands present beauty rich and rare, “let every stage advance Australia Fair”

The Australian national anthem is highly ironic and its hypocritical.

Firstly it’s written in old English style which is no longer relevant in our multicultural society. Today there are over 30 diverse languages, less than 1% of the total population speak a traditional aboriginal language and 80% of Australians only speak English.

Secondly the Australian national anthem has no mention of aboriginal culture, Even though this culture is the most ancient culture in human history, dating back 75,000- 50,000 years ago.

We say  “For those who’ve come across the seas We’ve boundless plains to share; With courage let us all combine”

But today For those who’ve come across the sea’s, we don’t welcome them with fair moral responsibility. We say “we have boundless plains to share; and will toil with hearts” we sing ‘Our land abounds in nature’s gifts Of beauty rich and rare;

In history’s page, let every stage Advance Australia Fair.” These statements are redundant because of the refugee crisis, genocide and the on going discrimination against aboriginal people as well as the destruction against our natural resources. we do want to dredge the reef, and cut away huge swaths of the land for open-cut mines, and turn our waterways and agricultural land into toxic coal seam gas fields. Perhaps we need a new tourism advertising campaign: ‘Australia’s natural beauty: a limited time only offer! Get in quick or you’ll miss out!’

Some of these issues make it feel unethical to proudly be Australian and sing this song with joy. Ultimately “Advancing Australia Fair” means addressing these issues instead of pretending they don’t exist and turning a blind eye to them.

Being Australian means something different to all of us. We’ve all been affected by differently by Australians democratic beliefs.

Our home is girt by sea;

Our island nation is indeed ‘girt’ by sea. Funnily enough, this means that all those early settlers arrived by boat. But they were certainly not Boat People.

For me being an Australian Citizen means safety, equality, family, community and a vast diverse landscape to appreciate.

We preach‘Our land abounds in nature’s gifts Of beauty rich and rare; With courage let us all combine. Let’s stop turning a blind eye to the words in which make up our cultural identity.

As an united community we all want our earth to continue to be healthy and plentiful.

I think this is a critical time to unite, share our boundless plains, to explore diverse cultures, our planet is under serious environmental massacre and the first thing we need to do is stop thinking as an I and start thinking like a WE.
